What human in the loop means: a person in the AI process
The AI prepares, the person decides. It is the simplest way to get the benefits of automation without its worst risks: the AI does the reading, sorting and first draft, while sending to the customer, making a payment or deleting something goes through a human click.
The point is choosing where to put the person. If they have to check everything, automation saves nothing. If they check nothing, the first mistake goes straight to the customer. You start by checking a lot and loosen up where the AI proves reliable.
An example in a small business
A distributor uses AI to prepare replies to customers asking about the status of their orders. Replies about delays within standard times go out on their own; those that deal with refunds or long delays stay as drafts until an operator approves them.
The most common mistakes
- Putting approval on everything: people start approving without reading.
- Not putting it on irreversible actions, such as payments and messages sent to customers.
- Not recording who approved what.
Why it matters to you
Many businesses give up on automation because they fear the mistake that reaches the customer. Human in the loop is the practical answer to that fear: it lets you start straight away, with the AI preparing and a person approving, and remove checks only when the data shows they are no longer needed.

Frequently asked questions
Does the law require human oversight?
For high-risk systems the AI Act requires it. For the others it is not a general obligation, but it is good practice.
Does it slow the work down?
Less than you might expect, if the person only checks the actions that matter and finds everything already prepared.
Who should the person approving be?
Whoever does that job today and knows the difficult cases. You need someone who can spot an error at a glance, not just any employee who clicks approve.

A chatbot answers. An agent acts: it decides the steps, uses software and sees a task through.

Prompt injection is an attack in which someone hides instructions inside a text that an AI reads, such as an email or a web page, to make it do something its user does not want.
